The Cigna Group launched Evernorth Health Services in 2020 with a clear purpose: to make the health care system better and make people better. Evernorth was a strategic evolution to meet the growing demand for integrated, flexible, and innovative solutions across the U.S. health care landscape.
Formed by bringing together The Cigna Group’s pharmacy, care, benefit, and specialty services under one brand, Evernorth’s mission is reflected in its work to increase access to care, drive affordability, and improve patient outcomes.

These are highlights in Evernorth's evolution and not a complete list.
Increasing access to quality care
Approximately 89 million Americans live in areas with an insufficient amount of primary care physicians, resulting in limited access to essential health services. In addition, the average national wait time for new physician appointments is 31 days, impeding timely patient care. Access is the first step to better health – and Evernorth has made access to care simpler, faster, and more connected than ever before.
- Expanding pathways to care: Bringing virtual care platform MD Live into the Evernorth family has expanded virtual options for urgent care, primary care, behavioral health, and dermatology, empowering people to start care digitally and remain connected across treatment settings.
- Helping people navigate the system: The creation of CareNav+ offers individuals a digital-first experience to help them better understand all of their available benefits, determine the best next steps to take for their situation, and navigate smoothly through the care system.
- Partnering with independent pharmacies: Express Scripts’ IndependentRx Initiative further supports people in rural communities by expanding access to health care and increasing reimbursements for independent pharmacies – enabling them to add enhanced clinical services, including improved care for patients with chronic conditions.
- Connecting patients to behavioral care, quickly: The Evernorth Behavioral Care Group connects patients to evidence-based, outcomes-driven therapy both virtually and in person – often within 72 hours.
Making medicines more affordable and accessible
Approximately 16% of U.S. adults did not fill a needed prescription in the past year due to cost, according to Evernorth’s latest Vitality research (Q2 2025). Affordability and accessibility are essential for people to receive the care they need, and Evernorth has multiple approaches to improve both.
- Making insulin more affordable: Express Scripts’ Patient Assurance Program caps out-of-pocket costs for insulin and other diabetes medications at $25 for a 34-day supply.
- Helping support biosimilar adoption: Express Scripts added the first FDA-approved interchangeable insulin biosimilar to our National Preferred Formulary, and later Evernorth announced plans to have Humira and Stelara biosimilars available at $0 out-of-pocket for eligible patients of Accredo.
- Bringing more clarity to pharmacy costs: Express Scripts launched the ClearCareRx and ClearNetwork models that improve transparency in medication pricing.
- Helping ensure access to and value of GLP-1s: Because high-cost therapies like GLP-1s can create volatility for both plan sponsors and patients, Evernorth’s suite of GLP-1 solutions, including EnCircleRx and EnReachRx, give participating plans a predictable framework while preserving access and providing clinical support for the people who benefit from these medicines. And, with EnGuide Pharmacy, purpose-built to fulfill prescriptions for GLP-1s, Evernorth has created a dedicated pharmacy to provide patients with a streamlined experience and specialized clinical support.
Together with our broader cost and transparency protections, these actions make medicines more attainable today and more sustainable tomorrow.
Focusing on support for specialty patients and providers
Specialty conditions are among the most challenging in health care. Many are treated with complex medications that may be administered at home or in a hospital, physician’s office, or clinic. Evernorth supports patients living with specialty conditions and the providers who care for them in a variety of ways. Accredo, its leading specialty pharmacy, delivers direct-to-patient care primarily in their homes. Evernorth also offers solutions for providers caring for patients in non-home settings.
- Supporting providers’ ability to deliver patient care: Evernorth’s Health System Services division is focused on supporting providers who treat specialty patients including hospitals and health systems. Evernorth offers these providers a variety of solutions, including complex medication distribution, inventory management technology, home and ambulatory infusion solutions, and more.
Accelerating innovation through partnership and collaboration
True innovation thrives on collaboration because it brings together diverse perspectives, expertise, and resources – allowing ideas to evolve faster, solutions to scale smarter, and breakthroughs to emerge that no single entity could achieve alone.
- Translating promising concepts into scalable solutions: The Lab by Evernorth in Morris Plains, New Jersey, serves as Evernorth’s enterprise innovation center – a physical space where teams can bring together clients, clinical experts, researchers, and developers to pilot and perfect new health care capabilities. This is where ideas are pressure-tested, workflows are refined, and potential value is assessed – so that when innovations roll out, they’re ready to make a measurable difference.
- Advancing a more holistic approach to health: Evernorth partnered with psychologist Dr. Richard Ryan to create the Evernorth Vitality Index, a first-of-its-kind tool that measures a person’s capacity to live with health, strength, and energy across various dimensions of their life. The index enables employers, plan sponsors, and physicians to track the vitality of the populations they serve and identify areas for improvement, as well as whether their interventions are making a difference. By quantifying the key drivers of vitality, the Index translates insights into targeted action that helps improve lives and lower health care costs.
