As more patients and providers face the challenges of managing complex and chronic specialty conditions – such as cancer, bleeding disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, rare diseases, and more – the need for reliable medication access and expert treatment support has never been greater. To help meet this rising demand, Evernorth Health Services has opened its largest specialty pharmacy and distribution facility in the United States. This new 200,000-square-foot facility in Newark, Delaware, expands Evernorth’s ability to deliver lifesaving medications to patients living with complex specialty conditions in the Northeast and across the U.S.
The state-of-the-art facility brings together Accredo Specialty Pharmacy services and CuraScript SD specialty distribution operations in one location. This co-location creates a more integrated specialty care model by streamlining fulfillment, improving care coordination, and helping patients begin treatment more quickly.
The site also features advanced robotic and automation technologies, which support the safe and efficient delivery of temperature-sensitive medications. Staffed by more than 100 Delawareans, the facility is anticipated to:
- Dispense 1.5 million specialty prescriptions from Accredo each year.
- Distribute 200,000 orders of specialty medications and related supplies from CuraScript SD each year.
“The demand for specialty medications continues to grow at an accelerated pace, and our expansion in Delaware underscores our commitment to supporting patients living with complex and chronic conditions and the providers who treat them,” said Matt Perlberg, president of pharmacy and care delivery at Evernorth Health Services. “Our newest care delivery facility in Newark is an essential part of our specialty pharmacy network, which, collectively, dispenses millions of medications each year.”
At the official opening event held at the new facility on October 29th, employees from Evernorth, along with Governor Matt Meyer, U.S. Representative Sarah McBride, and other elected officials, gathered to celebrate the occasion. During the event, guests assembled hundreds of first aid kits for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware. This volunteer activity is part of The Cigna Group’s broader partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America through its philanthropic entity, The Cigna Group Foundation. Evernorth Health Services is a division of The Cigna Group.
“This facility supports the patients who rely on us every day,” Perlberg said. “By expanding our operations in Newark, we’re helping ensure individuals living with complex conditions have faster, more reliable access to the therapies they need, supported by the clinical expertise that helps them achieve the best possible outcomes.”
