What is F6 and what does it mean to me?

F6, or NCPDP Telecommunication Standard Version F6, is an HIPAA‑mandated, industry update to the pharmacy claims transaction standard. This will help meet the needs of an evolving health care ecosystem with more precise data, new use cases and long‑term compatibility with industry standards. Clients could mainly see changes in:

ID cards

Member ID cards should now reference an eight-digit IIN (formerly a six-digit BIN) to help route pharmacy claims for processing.

Reporting

Various claim detail reports and file layouts including billing and eligibility will need updates to accommodate new and expanded fields.

Intent templates

New data points are now available as part of a pharmacy response, which could be added to intent documents. Automation used to receive intent may also see updates.

Different from a benefit, plan design or formulary change

F6 is a transaction standard update, which may impact how data is exchanged between pharmacies and payers/PBMs and ultimately consumed by you as our client and/or your vendors.

January 1, 2027

As requested, ID cards will begin reflecting 8-digit IINs, replacing 6-digit BINs for all cards produced by Express Scripts

If your ID cards are not managed by Express Scripts, we recommend you update cards to have the new 8-digit IIN in alignment with NCPDP standards

8-digit IINs are simply the 6-digit BIN with two zeros (00) added to the end (EX: BIN 003858 -> IIN 00385800)

Note: It is not required to reprint ID cards starting January 1, 2027; however, we strongly recommend clients print the 8-digit IIN with any scheduled printing/reprinting efforts.
Pharmacies will be notified how to properly submit the BIN/IIN value during the transition period where both vD.0 and vF6 claims can be adjudicated.

August 14, 2027

Transition period begins—Express Scripts begins accepting/processing version F6 and version D.0 claims in parallel

April 14, 2028

Compliance date—All HIPAA-covered entities must exclusively adjudicate transactions in version F6
