As of mid-April, there were approximately 200 cases of a rare blood clotting issue observed in individuals who received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in Europe, and nine cases of clotting for approximately 8 to 9 million Johnson & Johnson vaccinations administered in the United States.

While all medications and vaccines have side effects, it’s important to remember that, to date, the vast majority of vaccine side effects have been mild, resolve on their own and are not serious or life threatening, recognizing that much of this is changing in real time. However, let’s explore how common blood clotting is without vaccination and the risks of clotting with other medications.
